183 days in a calendar year is the most common trigger, but not the only one. Some countries use a rolling 12 months (the UK uses a statutory residence test), and a home, family or main economic interests can make you resident with fewer days. Arrival and departure days both count here.
The 90/180 rule applies to people without an EU, EEA or Swiss passport or residence permit. Any 180-day window can hold at most 90 days in the 29 Schengen countries, and arrival and departure days both count. Days in Ireland, Cyprus, the UK and other non-Schengen countries don't count. Since October 2025 the EU Entry/Exit System records these days at the border, so mistakes are visible. For an official check, use the European Commission's short-stay calculator.
